15th Century Lengberg Bra by DaisyViktoria 15th Century Lengberg Bra by DaisyViktoria
An incredible medieval clothing find was recently unearthed at Lengberg Castle in Austria, with clothing dating to the 14th-15th centuries. Among the fragments were some medieval bras, the likes of which we have never seen before. I was so excited that I went ahead and made this one, along with matching panties, based primarily on some underpants from the same find, as soon as it was released to the public. It's all linen with some lace embellishments.

I love how you have your hair in the pictures, how do you get it to stay like that?

I was going to ask if you had a tutorial on how to make them...then realised you make costumes to sell so possibly wouldn't do tutorials on how to make the things *blush*

Fantastic! I've been trying to find something supportive to wear beneath things. This will be a treat, and bonus.... it's even long line! Oooh AND I get to tell nay-sayers to stuff it about bras not existing in medieval days! Thank you so much for sharing this and giving me a direction to look in!

The bra looks more comfortable than the modern ones

Haha, yeah, this is quite comfortable! I've always preferred the support and feel of historical foundation garments over popular modern ones. (:

It amuses me how much this looks like a modern bra. Yet the lacing at the side would probably fit better and be more comfortable than the elastic bands we put up with. And is there a reason we don't make underwear out of linen? Is it scratchy or something? Because it would be lighter than cotton, wouldn't it?

This is beautiful and very attractive.

There are different grades of linen textiles, as there are with most fibers. In general, linen is very comfortable though! It also breathes amazingly well. Linen is now a bit more of a higher end fabric due to the price, which is much higher than that of cotton. Linen used to be easier to get than cotton, depending on your location of course, so it was used much more ubiquitously. Linen is one of my favorite fibers!

I saw that article too and thought it was really interesting. It's really cool to see what they must have looked like when they were new.

Great work! Just a note though, the underwear weren't really "matching" as they were said to be mens, not womens =)

It doesn't really matter! I was aiming to make a set, so it doesn't really matter if that exact pair of underpants went with that exact bra from the find. I mean, I'm not going to put my model in nothing but a bra (though the men may like that...) And there is a big debate on whether women wore underwear, the current consensus of which seems to be "we think so"! (:

Haha that works. I liked your recreation of the bra, gave me a better idea of where they were going with it, since it was hard to tell from what there was left in the picture. Very nice work =)

Thanks! Yeah, totally! It's going to be really interesting to see all the different ways this can be interpreted - also including the other bras they found - since they are all in fragments, and the best we can do is make educated guesses based on what we have and what else we know.

Thought so - medieval era is REEEEEALLYYYY underestimated when it comes to all aspects of life.
And now it turns out that later periods of time were barbaric even when it came to underwear xD

Holy cow. THANK you so much for sharing this! I hadn't heard anything about these new finds yet and got all excited researching!
Now I can't help imagining thousands of reenactresses worldwide happily sewing authentic bras for themselves, sighing "thank god" and "finally..". ;)

Hah, yes! I had a similar "thank god, finally" reaction while thinking about what new bras I could wear with my reenactment gowns. (:
